New administration releases blueprint for U.S. immigration

With new U.S. presidential administrations, often comes new immigration priorities, and this is no different for this new presidential administration. The new administration recently released its “blueprint” for an immigration overhaul to make it more fair, orderly, and humane, while still maintaining our nation of borders.

The new U.S. immigration law overhaul

The new administration’s U.S. immigration law overhaul blueprint identifies five areas where federal agencies will implement new policies. These policies include ensuring a secure, humane, and well-managed border. In addition, the federal agencies will implement orderly and fair processing of asylum applications, while strengthening collaborative migration management with regional partners, and investing in Central America to address the root causes of migration.

Border wall?

Many will note that this new immigration policy does not include a border wall, which is not surprising. Indeed, early in the new president’s term, he froze the funds appropriated by the prior administration to complete sections of border wall along the southern border. The White House’s fiscal 2022 budget actually redirected those appropriated border wall funds toward robust investments in border security measures, like border technology and modernization of land ports of entry, that are proven to be more effective at improving safety and security at the border.

New asylum policies

Part of these new policies include expedited processing and removals for those migrants not seeking asylum. The new administration will also seek to streamline the asylum application process, including maximizing legal representation for asylum applicants. In fact, the proposed budget includes nearly $40 million in funding for pro bono legal representation and appointing 100 more immigration judges and additional support staff.

Key takeaways

For those looking to immigrate to the U.S., this new administration’s blueprint likely comes as good news. However, these policy changes have not been implemented, and we do not know what the new regulations will actually be or a timeline on when they will be promulgated.
